Ladell Keeney, 87, of San Saba passed away Monday, February 16, 2009 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Ladell was born November 27, 1921 in Babyhead, the daughter of Lloyd Fleming and Emma Beasley Fleming. On December 5, 1945 Douglas Keeney and Ladell Fleming were married in San Antonio, Texas. She attended the Methodist Church.
Ladell is survived by one son, Radow Keeney and his wife, Cathy of Jarrell; one daughter, Linda Linn and her husband, Ronnie of Alamogordo, N.M.; five grandchildren, Jamie Johnson; Kristi Wilborn and her husband, Duane; Shane Linn and his wife, Brigette; Tara Ponder and her husband, Arlan; and Nicole Linn; five great-grandchildren, Leilani Johnson; Christian Wilborn; Makenzi Ponder; Kalei Ponder; and Hannah Linn; one sister, Mona Gutierrez of Hemit, California. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Ladell is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and one sister.
Services were held Sunday, February 22, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at the Howell-Doran Funeral Home Chapel with Larry Conner officiating. Interment followed at the Chappel Cemetery.
The family received friends, Saturday, February 21st from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.
at the Howell-Doran Funeral Home Chapel.
Nancy E. King, 80, of Wichita Falls, TX
passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at her residence.
Nancy was
born on September 15, 1930 in Preston, Iowa to Edward Janssen and Esther
Butterworth.
Nancy graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College in
1951 with a degree in Physical Education. She taught in Oelwein, Iowa for three
years where she met John Mason King.Nancy and John were united in marriage in
Preston, Iowa and remained married for fifty three years until December 23, 2006
when John passed away.
John was a Master Sgt. in the Air Force and he
and Nancy were stationed in Maryland, Japan, Texas, Spain and Hawaii. Nancy
taught Physical Education in San Antonio, TX and later retired at Hart Graphics
in Austin, TX where she worked for over twenty years. Nancy was a member of the
Lutheran Church.
Nancy was survived by, her daughters, Sumi King and her
husband David J. Cerreta of Wichita Falls, TX and Tracy Kozah and her husband
Ghassan of Dallas, TX; her grandchildren, Foaud Constatin Kozah, Khalil
Alexandre Kozah, Ariana Lorrane Cerreta and Alessandra Kira Cerreta; her sister,
Mildred Janssen Clarkson Freyer of Preston, IA.
Nancy is preceded in
death by her husband, John Mason King.
Services will be at a later
date.

Funeral services for Albert Richard "A.R." Kuykendall were held May 7, 2011.
He passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2011; he was born July 1, 1923 at Cherokee, Texas to Eula Gray and Warren Uyless Kuykendall. He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Eula; his brother, Randall "Smokey"; sisters, Kathryn and Camile; daughter, Kathryn Marlene and his loving wife, Billie Gene (Peacock) Kuykendall, April 23, 2002; they had 52 years of good marriage together.
Survivors are daughters Sidonee Seward of Austin and Becky Davis of Valley Spring; grandsons, Sean Krenek of Austin, Logan Davis of Valley Spring and Peter Culbert of New Hampshire; two great grandsons, Ian and Tyler Culbert of New Hampshire; brother, Kenneth Kuykendall & wife Maud Ann of Cherokee and numerous nieces and nephews.
A. R. enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard on September 22, 1942. He was aviation ordinance man, patrolling the North Atlantic for submarines. He later volunteered to go to "LTA" (Lighter Than Air) school at Lakehurst, New Jersey for blimp training under the Navy. The Navy was going to use the coast guard and blimps to patrol for submarines, but the war ended and they were sent to Traverse City, Michigan, to re-open the Navy Base and perform air sea rescue and Rota, Spain.
A.R. got out of the coast Guard after WWII and enlisted in the Army Reserves. After twelve years, he entered Navy Reserves and remained in it until he retired with 39 years as Chief Petty Officer in 1982. During these years of service A. R. attended the following stations: Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, NY- Boot camp; St. Augustine, FL- Gunnery School; Providence RI- Receiving Station; Salem, MA- Coast Guard Air Station; Elizabeth City, NC- Air Station, Overhaul and Supply; Lakehurst, NY-Blimp Base; traverse City,
MI- Air Sea Rescue; Camp Pendleton, CA; Fort Hood, TX; Fort Sill, OK; Dallas Naval Air Station; New Orleans Life Boat Station and Rota, Spain. He worked for Armco Steel in Houston for 26 years and then retired. A. R. and his wife Billie Gene returned to the life he knew as a young boy, ranching.
Visitation was held 6:00 P.M., Friday, May 6, 2011 at Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home, Llano. Funeral services were held
3:00 P.M., Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Cherokee Church of Christ with Brother Leston Fields officiating. A military graveside service was provided by the Highland Lakes Honor Guard at Gray Cemetery in San Saba County.
Berniece Kuykendall, of Llano, TX, passed
away Sunday, November 2, 2008, in the Llano Memorial Hospital at the age of 88
years. She was born February 28, 1920, in Esbon, Texas, to Charles Lynn and Eva
Jane (Wooten) Harlow. Berniece was the fourth of their seven children and their
only daughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of
64 years, Wilson, and 4 brothers (Nolan, Edsil, Clinton, and M.C.) as well as
twin siblings who died at child birth.
She is survived by daughters (and
their spouses) Linda Wiliece and Richard Hoffman, of Plano, Texas; and Sandra
and Franklin Crain of Cherokee, Texas; as well as three grandchildren, Dale
Christian and wife, Jennifer, of College Station; Tye Crain and Eric Solada, of
Oakland, CA; and Dawn Riordan and husband, Shea, of College Station. Berniece
truly became "great,", when three great granddaughters entered her life –
Natalie and Alanna Christian and Charlotte Riordan all of College Station.
Surviving brothers and their spouses are Tilmon and Sylvia Harlow of Llano; Dale
and Dorothy Harlow of Celina, Texas; and Carlos and Shirle Harlow of Colorado
Springs, CO; also, sisters-in-law Norma Lee Harlow of Llano and Rosemary Harlow
of Brownwood as well as numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and
nephews.
Berniece attended school in Esbon and lived there until she met
Wilson and was married on April 2, 1941, in Valley Springs, Texas. She was, as
many young women of that day, left alone when Wilson was called to his country's
service in World War II. She gave birth to their first daughter, Linda Wiliece,
only 2 months after Wilson shipped out for Europe and would not see him for 2
years. During this time she lived with her parents in Esbon and her in-laws,
Homer and Pearl Kuykendall in Cherokee. She sewed and knitted gloves, socks,
etc. for the war effort. When Wilson returned, they lived in Cherokee for the
remainder of their lives where she supported Wilson in his ranching endeavors
and as San Saba County Commissioner for twenty years.
Berniece and Wilson
enjoyed many things together including playing dominoes, attending fiddling
contests, working with their daughters in 4-H projects, traveling to reunions
with Wilson's Army buddy's, and enjoying their grandchildren. She was an
accomplished seamstress and self-taught artist; clouds, windmills, bluebonnets,
and oak trees were her specialty. Her eye for colors served her well in her
sewing as well as in her painting. She often made school costumes for plays and
special occasion dresses for Jr.-Sr. banquets both for her daughters and
others.
She served as a 4-H leader when her girls were at home, was an
active member of the PTA, sold Avon products for many years, taught Bible and
VBS classes at the Cherokee Church of Christ of which she was a member all her
adult life, and participated in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Cherokee Volunteer
Fire Department. Her Christian faith was an inspiration to all who came in
contact with her. She will long be remembered not just by her family, but by the
community, for her devotion to her Lord Jesus, her family, and her community.
One of her biggest worries after she could no longer live at home or drive and
moved into Care Inn Nursing Home in Llano was that she could not attend church
regularly. But, this did not keep her from reading her Bible regularly until her
eye sight prevented this.
Berniece had a zeal for life and wanted to live
it to the fullest even though handicapped by many physical ailments in her later
years. As a young woman she often "showed up" her daughters by doing better
cartwheels than they could and by participating in the mother/daughter charity
basketball games at the high school (even if she couldn't get out of bed for two
days after the game.)
Services for Mrs. Kuykendall were held Thursday,
November 6, at 2:00 p.m. at the Cherokee Church of Christ with interment
following at the Kuykendall Cemetery in Cherokee. Officiating was Minister Doug
Suggs and Dr. Jerry Christian.

Matthew Kuykendall, 80, of Hixson, passed away on Friday, October 16, 2009 at his residence. He was born May 7, 1929 in Brownwood TX, the son of Johnson Kuykendall and Cloma Walker Kuykendall. Matthew Kuykendall and Anna Jeannette Tittle were married on April 2, 1953 in North Carolina. He was a native of Texas and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He lived in the Hixson area for over 40 years and was a member of North Hamilton Church of Christ. He enjoyed square dancing, hunting, outdoor activities and spending time with his family. His kindness, generosity and loving ways touched many lives. He will be missed by everyone that knew him.
Matthew is survived by his sons, Mike Kuykendall and his wife, Diane of Weskan, KS; Scott Kuykendall and his wife, Karla of Dayton, TN; his daughters, Lisa McDaniel and her husband, Eddie of Soddy-Daisy, TN; Kerri Sowell and her husband, Drew of Hendersonville, TN; 13 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and one sister, Marillynn Hawkins of Cherokee.
Matthew is preceded in death by his wife, Anna Jeanette Kuykendall; and one son, Mitchell Todd Kuykendall.
A graveside service was held Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Kuykendall Cemetery in Cherokee, TX with Doug Suggs officiating.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Cherokee Home for Children.
